Dr. Shara Sand, Psy.D., has been recognized for her outstanding accomplishments as a Licensed Psychologist and for her continued dedication to the field.
A highly experienced professional, Dr. Sand offers her clients a wide range of psychotherapeutic services to help adolescents and adults alike to live more emotionally balanced, productive and fulfilling lives. Her work addresses the symptoms of depression, anxiety, and self-harm, as well as issues relating to sexuality, creative issues, performance blocks, gender, infertility, and parenting issues.
Dr. Sand has always had a particular interest in human behavior and the thought process behind the decisions that people make to either enhance or inhibit their lives. She firmly believes that psychotherapy is beneficial at addressing conflicts and helping clients to make decisions that will fulfill them. Her approach is unique and believes in the importance of listening to others without making judgments.
In 1990, Dr. Sand received a Master of Arts in Psychology from the Yeshiva’s Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology after which she went on to achieve a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 1993. She also completed Postdoctoral training in Medical Psychology and AIDS at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City.
Before heading into a career as a well-respected psychiatrist, Dr. Sand attended Manhattan School of Music achieving a Bachelor of Music in 1983. Two years later, she earned a Master of Arts in Trombone Performance at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. To this day music is an integral part of Dr. Sand’s practice as a psychiatrist. Since 2012, she has provided counseling services to music students at the Manhattan School of Music.
Since 1994, Dr. Sand has been the Assistant Director of clinical training at the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology of Yeshiva University and has been a private practice psychologist since 1995. Dr. Sand has additionally had the role of Associate Professor of Psychology at LaGuardia Community College for the last 14 years and has been the co-chair of the sexualities and gender identities committee of Division 39 of the New York State Psychological Association since 2011.
In her local community, Dr. Sand has spent time volunteering her services in pro bono asylum evaluations with Healthright International. From 2010 – 2011 she was the President of the Social Issues Division of the New York State Psychological Association. She also has involvement with many organizations that relate to her field and has an affiliation with the New York State Psychological Association, the American Psychological Association, the Performing Arts Medicine Association, the Association for the Study of Dreams, and the Musicians Union Local 802.
Proving her achievements, dedication, and leadership in psychology, Dr. Sand has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who as a Top Doctor in the field of Psychology for her accomplishments as a New York State Licensed Psychologist. Her other accolades include being awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by Division 44 of the Society for the Psychological Study of LGBT Issues in 2014 and receiving the Diversity Award by the sexuality and gender identity committee of Division 39 of the New York State Psychological Association in 2016 and 2019. In 2018, Dr. Sand additionally achieved an award from the Forensic Division of the New York State Psychological Association.
Looking to the future, Dr. Sand aims to develop and grow a counseling center at the Manhattan School of Music, helping to meet the needs of the students. She also aims to have a stable practice and extend her work with the LGBT community.
